15 September 2015 was a day to celebrate for Medcenter Container Terminal, Contship’s transhipment hub in Gioia Tauro (Italy). It was 20 years since the first vessel - the “CMB Concord” – called at the newly developed facilities at the port of Gioia Tauro (now known as Medcenter Container Terminal/MCT).
The port of Gioia Tauro, originally built in 1975, disappeared off the map for 20 years until the early 1990s, when Contship’s visionary founder, Angelo Ravano, had the idea of transforming the port into a modern transhipment hub.
Over the past two decades, MCT handled 52.5 million teu and welcomed 47,120 ship calls. Today MCT is the region’s largest private company. It has 1,300 employees and contributed EUR 860 million to the local economy, as well making investments totalling EUR 340 million, as of December 2014.
